Our Fly Fishing Bucket List

I think every angler has a list tucked away in their tackle box or mental notes of spots they’ve heard about that offer amazing fly fishing. Although fishing the same areas has its benefits, such as knowing the best sections where those large Brown Trout like to hide and what flies will guarantee results, it’s always fun to explore new and far away places. Here’s a list of a few of those spots on Our Fly Fishing Bucket List.

The first spot is a long ways away from the streams we stick to here in Colorado, but it is well worth the plane ride. With more than 450 rivers, Norway is the spot to be if you’re looking to fish for big Salmon. Alta River definitely stands out from the rest, with the average Salmon weighing in at 10.8lbs. To fish Alta River you first need to put in for a permit. Licenses are sold through a lottery system, with one being for residents and the other for anglers outside of the region. If fishing is a way of life, put in for that permit and start saving your pennies as this trip is fairly expensive as well, but will definitely leave you will some great memories.

The next spot is perfect for those of you targeting Brown and Rainbow Trout. Located in the island of New Zealand is the Tongariro River, part of New Zealand’s largest River, the Waikato. With multiple access points and lodging this is a great place to test your skills as these fish living in the crystal clear water are notoriously hard to trick. The trout here grow in Lake Taupo and every year around 60,000 wild Rainbow Trout head back up the river. With an incredibly long fishing season (almost year round), add this one to your list!

The next spot is a little closer to Colorado compared to the others and resembles the areas we are used to. The Kvichak River in Alaska is home to the world’s largest Sockeye Salmon run in the world. Located along the Alaskan Peninsula in the southwestern portion of the state this river flows from America’s largest lake, Lake Lliamna. Some of Alaska’s best fishing lodges are in this area to help you reel in 4 different Salmon species, Arctic Grayling, Northern Pike, Arctic Char, and plenty of Rainbow Trout!
